Retrospective! This week, The Crew takes a look back on our journey through the best and worst from 10 carefully selected (with a die) directors. Who did we love? Who did we hate? Plus: What are we doing for Season 3?! If Dan has his way, we’ll be taking to the high seas. Tune in to find out what it all means!

Episode 69: Somewhere
(Search for the Worst)
This week, the crew wander aimlessly through Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere”. More fun than watching a car drive in circles? Who can say. Also, Dan introduces us to the concept of “Willfully Difficult” films, but is Brad willing to listen?
Episode 68: The Virgin Suicides
(Quest for the Best)
This week, the crew watches Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides”, based on the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Eugenides. This episode features a bunch of great discussion on the male gaze, book-to-film adaptations, and the oeuvre of Sofia Coppola. Check it out!
Ep 67: The Serpent and the Rainbow
(Search for the Worst)
This week, the crew watches Wes Craven’s The Serpent and the Rainbow. Listen. Guys. This movie is a mess, and so this episode is a little more scattered than usual. But! If you hang in there, there is some GREAT stuff. Dan says “scrotum”, like, 10 times. It’s great.
Episode 66: Scream
(Quest for the Best)
This week, The Crew watches the first in the Scream series, as we examine Wes Craven’s Quest for the Best. Find out if this late-90’s slasher flick still holds up, and who Dan thought the killer was!
Episode 65: Mimic
(Search for the Worst)
A trenchcoat bug, a spoon kid, unnecessary baby woes, and much more combine to create a surprisingly forgettable ’90s movie. The only thing Guillermo del Toro learned from this experience is not to work with the Weinsteins. We, however, didn’t learn anything.
Episode 64: Pan’s Labyrinth
(Quest for the Best)
Guillermo del Toro brings us a dark, violent, and compelling fairy tale cushioned inside the Spanish Civil War, cushioned inside World War 2. There’s a lot going on, but does it all still work 10 years later?
Episode 63: Prometheus
(Search for the Worst)
Ridley Scott (with a lot of help from Brad’s old friend Damon Lindelof) has crafted a truly massive mess of an Alien prequel that was a challenge just to summarize, but very very easy to critizise.
Episode 62: Blade Runner
(Quest for the Best)
Quest for the Best! The crew finds themselves in the very far-off future of 2019, where the line between life and replicant is blurry at best. Part noir, part sci-fi, and part 80s saxophone solos, it’s Ridley Scott’s self-professed most “complete film”—it might also be his strangest. Thanks, Philip K. Dick.
Episode 61: Chappie
(Search for the Worst)
Once again, The Crew is stuck in Johannesburg, South Africa, this time for Neil Blomkamp’s “Chappie”. What is this movie even? What is on Hugh Jackman’s head? Why is Sigourney Weaver in this? DOES ANYBODY HAVE DIE ANTWOORD?!
Episode 60: District 9
(Quest for the Best)
Get your moustaches on, and keep that black ink away from your mouth, it’s time to take care of some fookin’ prawns as The Crew watches Neil Blomkamp’s sci-fi refugee story, District 9.
Episode 59: The Last Airbender
(Search for the Worst)
Brad’s childhood is ruined as M. Night Shyamalan totally mishandles adapting the beloved anime into live action, proving also that he really shouldn’t helm blockbusters, ever.
Episode 58: The Sixth Sense
(Quest for the Best)
Quest for the Best! The crew continues the Directors Series with M Night Shyamalan and his debut, The Sixth Sense. Tune in to hear about the time before he was a punchline!
Episode 57: Maps to the Stars
(Search for the Worst)
Search for the Worst! David Cronenberg takes on Hollywood, incest, and a lot of poop (seriously) with Maps to the Stars. We’d rather be in Videodrome.
Episode 56: Videodrome
(Quest for the Best)
The crew quests for the best this week with David Cronenberg’s Videodrome. We feel icky, in a good way. Is Videodrome controlling us too?!
Episode 55: Psycho (1998)
(Search for the Worst)
Search for the Worst! This week, the crew checks in to the Bates Motel with Gus Van Sant’s highly unnecessary remake of Psycho and immediately want to check right out.
Episode 54: Good Will Hunting
(Quest for the Best)
Our Director’s Series continues with Gus Van Sant. The crew watched Best Original Screenplay winner Good Will Hunting, but Brad wonders, what’s so “good” about him anyway?
Episode 53: Planet of the Apes
(Search for the Worst)
Search for the Worst! This week, the crew goes bananas for Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes. Can Marky Mark save us all from certain death at the hands of Orangutang Paul Giamatti? Tune in to find out!
Episode 52: Beetlejuice
(Quest for the Best)
Quest for the Best! This week, it’s time to Jump in the Line with Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, BEETLEJUICE!
Episode 51: Aloha
(Search for the Worst)
Directors Series:
Search for the Worst! This week, Bradley Cooper hugs it out with John Krasinski, Rachel McAdams makes fun of John Krasinski, and Bill Murray tries to kill everyone (including John Krasinski). It’s time to figure where Cameron Crowe went wrong with Aloha.
Episode 50: Almost Famous
(Quest for the Best)
Welcome to Season 2 of Broken Picture Podcast! If you’re brand new, welcome! If you’re a long-time listener, thanks for sticking around. This season, we turn the camera around and hold the Captain of the ship accountable in our all-new Director’s Series. Kicking things off, The Crew hop on a bus with rock legends Stillwater in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous”.
